
This course teaches a basic knowledge of Irish Sign Language. This course is intended for all those who would like to be able to communicate with deaf people. The aim is to provide learners with a basic competence in Irish Sign Language. The course will introduce the principal grammatical features of ISL.
Classes are organised around topics which relate to people's everyday lives. These include: salutations, personal identification, colours, numbers, time, places, the weather, house and home, public notices, health and welfare services, food and drink, shopping, travel, and signing with children. Understanding Deaf culture is integrated into the learning of ISL.
Teaching is supported by the use of video.
This course is an extension of the beginners course. It is designed for people who use sign language at home/work and aims to provide learners with and intermediate level of proficiency in Irish Sign Language.
The learners basic knowledge of the grammatical structure of Irish Sign Language will be extended. Some exercises will include translations from ISL into English and from English into ISL.
The course lasts for the number of weeks/years suited to your needs.

For Deaf people: who are interested in learning how to translate Irish Sign Language (ISL) to English or English to ISL. A course book is used and examples from video will be used. Input from the students, using their own environment, are important.

This was started in July 1999 with the objective of facilitating the development of expressive and receptive language skills for young deaf children and their families. Handwords facilitator work with these children and their families to develop these skills either at home or at Montessori/pre-school.
